Ballard Hotel

Imagined as Seattle’s first tall timber building, this 8-storey hotel was designed to stand at 85 feet tall in the busy streets of downtown Ballard. Facing the east and west corners of Market Street, the new mid-rise property will feature 120 rooms as well as one level of underground parking for 30 vehicles. The use of cross-laminated timber highlights the simple geometry of the interior, while expressing the existing historic and modern buildings in the neighbourhood.

The structure will be comprised of a glulam post and beam frame with cross-laminated timber floor and roof panels, which will allow the structure to be erected in less time than a traditional steel or concrete building. This building will serve to provide much needed hotel space in a rapidly growing neighborhood, while the use of mass timber not only complements the client’s brand, but also allows for quieter installation amidst the surrounding residential blocks. The mass timber approach installation sequencing will also prove beneficial given the confined site plan.
