In 2008, Fast + Epp provided our structural services on the original build of this picturesque retreat (alongside Ramsay Worden Architects and Kindred Construction) by Alta Lake, located near Whistler. We were excited to return 14 years later and transform the property to embrace a modern mountain-lakeside feel.

This expansive residence, covering 10,000 square feet, features four bedrooms, and an impressive array of interior amenities, including an infrared sauna with lake views, a theatre room, and an entertainment area equipped with sliding pocket doors that lead outdoors.

The original residence consists of shallow concrete foundations and basement walls with suspended slab above. The main floor walls and roof are a combination of light wood frame, concealed steel and exposed heavy timber members.

The renovation process was extensive and involved reshaping the original structure, removing many internal structural walls and introduction of steel moment frames to allow for an open-concept layout.

The exterior back of the home was reconstructed, necessitating considerable structural work to excavate down 2.5 levels and establish a new foundation. This effort resulted in a beautiful two-level indoor/outdoor area, complete with over 3,000 square feet of heated patio space, two fire pits, a fully covered pergola, and a stainless-steel hot tub. Retractable sliding doors provide unobstructed access to Alta Lake, fostering an effortless blend with the surrounding natural landscape.

This renovation embraces biophilic design principles, emphasizing the integration of natural elements within built spaces, and showcases a refreshed aesthetic that captures the essence of the Pacific West Coast.
