Jochen Stahl to advise Aachen University of Applied Sciences team for 2021 Solar Decathlon

July 8, 2020

Alongside faculty from the Aachen University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule Aachen), Dr.-Ing Jochen Stahl served as a member of the jury responsible for selecting the university’s entry for the 2021/2022 Solar Decathlon. Leading up to the competition, he will advise Professor Jörg Wollenweber’s team of students from the Faculty of Architecture as they develop their design. The Solar Decathlon is a prestigious competition created by the US Department of Energy, which requires student teams to plan and construct an energy efficient building. The actual competition will be hosted by the Energy Endeavour Foundation in Wuppertal, and will be the first time that the competition takes place in Germany. The main event has been rescheduled to June 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am very much looking forward to supporting the team at FH Aachen as they prepare their design for submission”, says Jochen Stahl. Stahl belonged to the team from the Technical University of Darmstadt that claimed victory at the Solar Decathlon in 2007. The Darmstadt team went on to defend their top spot in 2009. “FH Aachen’s design combines sophisticated timber construction with an innovative energy and housing concept, and is therefore rightfully named ‘Connect’. I am sure that the young architects will be standing on the podium”, says the PhD civil engineer.

The focus of the 2021/2022 Solar Decathlon competition is the energy transition, and climate protection of urban space. The efficient use of energy and resources (such as the use of recycled building materials) are examples of themes included within this focus, and are critical features of sustainable construction.
