William Loasby
William is a structural engineer with close to 25 years of international and Canadian design experience. His work spans high-profile cultural, residential, and recreational projects, including collaborations with renowned architects including Herzog & de Meuron, Diamond Schmitt, Perkins + Will and Gehry Partners. Prior to joining Fast + Epp in 2015, William worked for many years at the Hong Kong office of Arup, following his initial structural training in the United Kingdom and Australia. His broad project background and global perspective inform a thoughtful, adaptable approach to structural design.
William has led several of Fast + Epp’s significant and complex projects, including Ādisōke, National Arts Centre, and the Vancouver Art Gallery’s original concept design. At his previous employer, he played a key role in Tai Kwun, the heritage redevelopment of Hong Kong’s historic central police station. His contributions reflect a strong ability to support ambitious architectural visions through clear, innovative structural solutions.
With a strong academic foundation and extensive hands-on experience, William is conversant in all major building materials and structural systems. In recognition of his innovative thinking, he was awarded the Innovation Award Grand Prize in Hong Kong in 2013 for his adaptive re-use of historical building structures, highlighting his ability to balance technical rigour with creative problem-solving.
William is also a dedicated teacher and mentor, and a believer in the importance of industry-wide collaboration and knowledge-sharing. He is an active member of the seismic panel of the UK’s Institution of Structural Engineers, as well as the institution’s mentoring program, Elevate. He is a frequent lecturer at local universities in Canada, and previously taught part-time at the University of Macau.
William holds a Master’s degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford and a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from The University of Hong Kong. He is a registered professional engineer in Canada, a chartered structural and civil engineer in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, and a member of the Institution of Engineers Australia.
