Located close to the heart of Whistler Village behind the Village Square, the Resort Municipality of Whistler sought an iconic, landmark bus shelter canopy that would welcome travelers into the community and act as its main transportation hub.

Together with Public Architecture, Fast + Epp helped develop an expressive timber canopy structure comprised of a triangular arrangement of glulam beams supporting CLT panels. To showcase the natural beauty of the wood, the number of vertical support columns were minimized, timber connections were concealed and no braces or visible lateral supports were used.

“This project is key to Whistler’s future success, and aligns with many of our strategic goals...These improvements will make visitor shuttle services to and from Whistler more efficient and attractive.”

Whistler Mayor, Nancy Wilhelm-Morden

To conceal timber connections at the intersections of the main glulam beam, Fast + Epp used a proprietary epoxy connection system developed in Germany, (HSK Connectors developed by TiComTec). Due to the cantilevered nature of the canopy and heavy snow-loading in Whistler, this application of the HSK Connector system is the most ambitious use of the system seen to date, according to TiCom Tec.

Adjacent to the Whistler Visitor Centre, the Whistler Gateway Loop offers visitors of this world-class, year-round destination an impressionable and welcoming beginning to their stay in the beautiful mountain town.
