Averaging about 29,000 daily riders, the Surrey Central transit station acts as a crucial link for commuters, students and other residents who travel to Vancouver and other Lower Mainland destinations for work and leisure. It is the city’s busiest SkyTrain station and required improvements to increase capacity, universal accessibility and safety.

Fast + Epp oversaw the structural upgrades for this project, as part of a larger strategy to revitalize seven other Expo Line SkyTrain stations. Surrey Central SkyTrain Station was the last of these upgrade projects and included the addition of a new elevator, three new escalators, a new staircase with better lighting, as well as two new entrances at the north side of the station.

Providing sustainable and user-friendly mass transit remains a key goal for Surrey – it is predicted to surpass Vancouver as the province’s most populous city by 2041. By increasing the capacity of Surrey Central SkyTrain Station and making its wayfinding processes more user-friendly, TransLink hopes to encourage more residents to opt for public transit in the coming years and leave their cars at home.
