The new Parkinson Recreation Centre will transform Kelowna’s recreational infrastructure, and encourage active living, promote wellness, and offer various recreational opportunities for residents. Designed to prioritize accessibility, sustainability, and flexibility, this centre spans over 3 times the size of the current facility and will serve as a long-term hub for the community.

The two-storey building features an L-shaped design, with the aquatic center anchoring one end and the triple gymnasium at the other. The facility encompasses three full-sized gyms with the track situated above on the second level, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and a 25-metre pool, as well as dedicated childcare and youth areas to serve a wide range of community needs. Extensive outdoor amenities include six sports fields, pickleball and tennis courts, a cycle track that connects to the Okanagan Rail Trail, and multi-use pathways linking to Mill Creek.

Project Essentials

  • Location Kelowna, BC

  • Size140,000 Sq. Ft.

Fast + Epp is excited to be collaborating with WSP as structural partners on the new 2-storey building which is proposed as a hybrid structure of steel, concrete, and mass timber, using a ‘right material for the right place’ approach. Mass timber has been implemented in locations where there is the desire for architecturally expressive exposed structure.

The fitness roof utilizes CLT panels supported on glulam beams. In the gymnasium and natatorium, long span structures are proposed as exposed hybrid glulam and steel trusses. A hybrid glulam and steel truss was selected due to glulam being a natural material that reflected the Okanagan and its lower embodied carbon.

With construction kicking off in summer 2025, delivery through an Integrated Project Delivery model is anticipated to be completed by late 2027.
