McEvoy & Dupont Apartments

First Community Housing (FCH) is a recognized leader in creating green, affordable developments that enhance their neighbourhoods.  For the McEvoy and Dupont Apartment towers, FCH plans to build 365 units of multi-family rental housing, situated next to the Caltrain Diridon Station, which will serve households earning 30% to 80% of the median income in the area.

Like most of FCH’s new construction projects, both towers are being designed to achieve LEED Platinum and will elevate the resident experience through sustainable, innovative design. The buildings will be one of the largest affordable mass timber high-rise projects in San Jose, with each tower consisting of 13 stories of mass timber over a concrete PT transfer podium.

The design put forth by the Fast + Epp team includes a hybrid lateral system with steel buckling restrained brace frames (BRB) and point supported CLT deck using a 5-ply system for residential floors. The mass timber panels, prefabrication, and modular components will help streamline construction while utilizing the new Tall Timber Code Provisions of IBC 2021 (and since adopted into the 2019 CBC).  Much consideration went into the choice of the materials – mass timber offers significant sustainability and biophilic benefits, steel was chosen for its seismic resilience and together they increase the overall speed of construction.

Residents will have access to plentiful community spaces including rooftop gardens and community terraces overlooking San José, an urban farm and a courtyard play area. The transit-oriented development prioritizes healthy building materials, dynamic placemaking, energy-efficient measures and the well-being of the residents who will call these buildings home.
