The Maskwa Medical Centre is a three-storey, 100,000 square feet purpose-built healthcare facility designed to address one of the region’s most pressing challenges: limited access to timely, coordinated healthcare. This new centre will centralize care by bringing together family doctors, specialists, mental health professionals, and allied health services in one location. The main floor will include a teaching clinic operated by the University of Alberta in partnership with Northwestern Polytechnic, with the capacity to train up to 20 medical residents per year.

The design of the Maskwa Medical Centre combines durability and flexibility to support the building’s robust programming. A below-grade concrete parkade forms the foundation of the structure, topped by a concrete transfer slab at grade to distribute loads from the superstructure above. The above-grade structure features glulam columns and beams paired with glued-laminated timber (GLT) panel floors, a system chosen for its ability to accommodate long spans and open layouts. This approach not only provides structural efficiency but also allows for adaptable interior spaces that can evolve with the healthcare facility’s changing needs over time.

Groundbreaking took place in May 2025, with the centre expected to open in late 2026. The project is a true collaborative effort between healthcare providers, academic institutions, and local government to improve healthcare in the region.
