The Edmonton Valley Line West LRT is the second phase of the City of Edmonton’s 27 km Valley Line expansion and builds on the Valley Line Southeast, completed in 2023.  

Extending 14 km from 102 Street in downtown Edmonton to Lewis Farms, it includes the construction of stations, bridges, guideways, and track infrastructure designed to improve transit capacity and reliability while integrating with the existing urban environment. The expansion supports long-term growth and strengthens the city’s public transportation network.

The line includes 14 street level stops and 2 elevated stations at Misericordia Hospital and West Edmonton Mall, designed to support the introduction of 46 new low-floor light-rail vehicles. It also includes an elevated guideway along 87 Avenue and 2 new bridges crossing Groat Road at Stony Plain Road and Anthony Henday Drive at 87 Avenue. 

Mass timber has been deployed as one of the primary materials for the roof structures of the transit stations throughout. Given the number of stops along the line, a common and repeatable structural response was developed, which also had design flexibility to respond to the unique aspects of each location. 

Delivered by Marigold Infrastructure Partners — comprised of Colas Infrastructure Canada, Parsons, Standard General, Francl Architecture, Fast + Epp, and Stantec — the $2.6 billion project is currently under construction, with work started in 2021 and completion anticipated for 2028.
