This project represented a significant investment in the revitalization of the Edmonds Town Centre neighbourhood. Recent population and demographic changes in the City of Burnaby and the decommissioning of another pool created the need for a new full-service recreational hub.

The new facility features a large natatorium, gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, fitness centre, administration offices and a pre-school area, over an underground parkade.

Fast + Epp’s structural solution was a combination of steel, cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete, and wood. Our engineers developed a distinctive three-dimensional space truss to support the radial steel roof structure in the natatorium. In addition, the cast-in place concrete pool structure has been designed to resist the hydrostatic water pressure without applying on external membrane coating.

By being responsive to a wide range of user needs from the get go, the facility was able to offer a rich mix of services and amenities for various social, recreational and cultural groups. Moreover, aquatic programming is accessible for those with disabilities – there’s a water elevator into the swim tank and ramps with handrails for the other leisure pools.
