The 3,000 square-foot single family residence is constructed of a wood frame and steel structure and features a green roof. With a discrete lateral system, Fast + Epp maximized the use of simple framing, allowing for a large amount of structural glazing to intensify the indoor and outdoor living and gathering spaces. The clerestories bring natural light in to further emphasize significant details in the design. The arrangement of the simple stair framing in the double-height entry area as well as over-height ceilings with flush framing helped eliminate the need for drop beams, helping achieve the client’s minimalistic vision.

To supplement the seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, steel support is integrated above retractable doors where the open living area extends to a bright courtyard. Nesting in the garden is an innovatively transformed shipping container studio.

This modest size family home is a modern addition to the traditionally equestrian area of town, with roofs kept to a minimal height allowing for neighbours to maintain their views. The seamless blend of open space flexibility, composition of building materials, and exposure to rich greenery accentuates the creative practicality behind the architectural design.
