A conceptual and visually stunning space, 75.9 House, a custom home on a field near Surrey in BC, is the creative vision of Omer Arbel Office.
The feature ‘lily pad’ columns were a result of a method of concrete pouring invented by his studio, using fabric stretched out between curved plywood ribs. Fast + Epp worked with the studio to develop a technique that allowed for one slow, continuous concrete pour which eliminated cold joints and minimized pressure on the lightweight fabric.
The larger columns shelter the home’s biggest rooms, including the dining and seating areas and the atrium, while smaller-scaled iterations are located in rooms like the principal bathroom and playroom.
The spaces are enclosed by fabric formed, curved retaining walls that extend outward into the surrounding landscape. By using straight lines and shapes alongside the tree-like columns, the design incorporates patterns found in residential architecture, while providing unique viewpoints from different angles.
75.9 House showcases how concrete can be used in unique ways to bring the beauty of nature into the design of a modern home.
