Limberlost Place wins 2023 NCSEA Award

November 20, 2023

We are delighted to announce that Limberlost Place has won an award at the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA)’s 2023 Structural Engineering Excellence Awards. Recognized in the New Buildings ($80 to $200 Million) category, the 10-storey building is Ontario’s first tall timber institutional building. Fast + Epp developed a unique large span beamless CLT timber-concrete composite ‘slab band’ system, accompanied by perpendicular CLT infill panels, supported on glulam columns. The unique ‘slab banded’ system enables architectural flexibility and unobstructed mechanical distribution. Limberlost Place has swiftly become a beacon for the mass timber movement, contributing significantly to the ongoing research and comprehension of mass timber systems.

The timber concrete composite slab bands underwent small-scale, half-scale, and full-scale testing at the University of Northern British Columbia in 2020, which will provide valuable engineering information back to the design community for future tall wood projects and composite systems.
