June 30, 2021

Check out our latest assessment report in collaboration with GHL Consultants LTD for “TRANSFERABILITY OF 2021 INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODE (IBC) TALL WOOD BUILDING PROVISIONS TO THE NATIONAL BUILDING CODE OF CANADA (NBCC)”.

Josephine Racine, Fast + Epp Engineer, contributed to the authorship of this study.

The report features one of the tallest mass timber hybrid buildings in the world: University of British Columbia Tall Wood House at Brock Commons and is used in this report to document the consequential and inconsequential differences and developed conclusions on whether the NBCC can adopt IBC provisions, and with what modifications so that the new provisions may fit the NBCC context.

The structural section of this paper discusses the essential Building Codes in the United States as well as material design requirements for structural design in both conventional and fire settings. The study evaluates and contrasts the design loads and load combinations used in the IBC and ASCE 7 building codes in the United States and the NBCC.
