New roof craned into SFU plaza

February 1, 2021

Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) Transportation Centre recently got a new lift.

Crews craned in a new roof as part of the SFU Plaza Renewal Project – a multi-phase extensive renovation and refreshment of the Academic Quadrangle and Convocation Mall areas of the SFU Burnaby Campus, originally built by Arthur Erikson in the 1960’s. The plaza serves a double function as a public space and as a roof sheltering education spaces beneath.

The project involves the replacement of the waterproof membrane and plaza paving finishes as well as the addition of new features such as landscaping elements, furniture and new amenity canopies.

Fast + Epp was retained by primary proponent, Public Design, to assist in this process by providing analysis of the historic 1960’s era concrete structures, as well as design of the new elements – most notably the new Transportation Center roof canopy, constructed from structural plate steel.
