Fast + Epp projects receive Prairie Wood Design Awards

March 19, 2020

Two Fast + Epp projects were recognized in the 2020 Prairie Wood Design Awards – a program by Wood WORKS! Alberta that celebrates and recognizes local design and industry professionals for their commitment to sustainable and economic building choices as well as their utilization of wood.

The Excellence in Commercial Wood Design Award was given to the Mountain Equipment Co-op store in the Brewery District located in Edmonton, Alberta. The new MEC store includes 3,800 m2 of space over two retail floors, where the structure reinforces concrete up to the second floor with an exposed CLT roof on steel framing. Steel trusses span 32 metres across the width of the building to frame the saw-tooth roof system and provide a large column-free area on the second floor.

The Capilano Library in Edmonton, Alberta won the Excellence in Institutional Wood Design Award. The project was largely collaborative that optimized the properties of steel and wood while emphasizing coordination. The extruded triple-peak shape that defines the building was achieved through steel moment frames spanned by glulam panels.

Fast + Epp is please to celebrate these project milestones with its project partners and extends its congratulations to Proscenium Architecture + Interiors, Aedefica, Patkau Architects, and Group2.
