Winners of Seattle Arch/Eng Design Competition announced
July 12, 2019
We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2019 Seattle Arch/Eng Student Design Competition with the University of Washington.
The competition asked students to design a roof covering over an Olympic sized pool and seating area. Teams were asked to consider both gravity and lateral load paths in their design, as well as constructability, construction time, cost and aesthetics.
The competition was adjudicated by a jury of Seattle-based practicing engineers and architects in an anonymous review.
The jury reviewed:
- evidence of a balanced design between architecture and engineering,
- appropriate use of materials based on appearance, durability, and physical strength properties, and
- the economic feasibility of the design.
Congratulations to the first place team for the Pool Roof design, who will take home $1000 in prize money, and to the second place team for the Swimming Pool Canopy design, who will take home $500.
“The winning submittal showed an inspired translation of a beach umbrella, and reflects a collaboration of understanding between the structural and architectural goals,” said Miller Hull Partnership.
