Originally an old repurposed restaurant, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Summerland detachment was in need of major repairs and upgrades to meet health and safety standards, building code, and police force security requirements. The need for safer homes, safer communities, and a sense of community inspired the town’s decision for a new detachment.

Project Essentials

  • LocationSummerland, BC
  • ClientRCMP E-Division
  • ArchitectKMBR Architects Planners Inc., Allen + Maurer Architects
  • Size10,000 ft² (929 m²)
  • BudgetC$3.8 million

The $3.8 million replacement project features a simple, functional and elegant single-storey, concrete block and glulam post-and-beam structure, designed to LEED Gold standards. The design allows for the interior of the building to be flooded with natural light from the large expanses of glass and overhead clerestory windows – reducing the need for artificial light. A complex heating and cooling system installed on the glulam timber post and beam structure enabled wasted heat from the adjacent arena ice plant to be utilized for floor-heating.
