Volunteers from Fast + Epp and Knight Architects partnered with Fika to build the 65 metre Ngayake Trail Bridge, a pedestrian suspension crossing that now serves more than 4,000 people in the Ngayake–Ruli and Kimbogo–Rwinkuba communities.

Fika envisions a world where poverty caused by rural isolation no longer exists, believing that connection is the foundation for opportunity. During the rainy season, the Mugwato River becomes dangerous and often impassable, cutting off access to schools, healthcare, and markets. Over 10 days, the team worked alongside the community to deliver a safe, year round connection while sharing practical skills to support ongoing maintenance.

Guided by a predetermined design provided by Fika that adapts to the site context, the cable supported bridge was constructed using human powered methods and locally available materials to ensure stability, low cost, and efficient assembly. With no heavy machinery on site, cables were carried across the river and tensioned by hand, suspenders and cross beams were carefully installed using consistent rope tie methods, and fencing was secured cable by cable. Despite limited tools and challenging terrain, close collaboration with the community made the physically demanding process efficient and deeply rewarding, resulting in infrastructure that strengthens access to vital resources.
