The new 3,800 m² MEC flagship store in the Brewery District is almost double the size of the former one and is slightly larger than the other local outlet in South Edmonton Common. The new space features a timber entry canopy, abundant natural lighting, and warm wood-infused interiors and accommodates not only more customers but also 50 more staff than in the old location.

The new store also provides additional services, including a more extensive full-service bike repair and ski-tech shop, a bike-fitting room and unique assessment tools to properly fit running shoes. There’s also meeting space available for community clubs and environmental organizations.

Key structural features of this 2-storey building include a steel feature stair, a steel and timber framed sawtooth roof to maximize natural light and an exposed concrete slab.  Additional timber elements include the innovative use of CLT framed fitting rooms and a sculptural interior timber canopy.  A brown brick façade pays homage to the historic brewery tower located nearby.

The store has been designed with sustainability in mind and features EV charging stalls, bike racks and showers for greener transportation, and utilizes roofing materials selected to reduce the heat island effect. Built to a LEED Silver Standard, the new building joins MEC’s growing portfolio of high-performance green buildings.
