2019 IStructE Awards Shortlist: Metrotown Skytrain Station and 3 Civic Plaza - Fast + Epp

Metrotown Skytrain Station and 3 Civic Plaza shortlisted for 2019 award by Institution of Structural Engineers

August 1, 2019

The Institution of Structural Engineers announced the shortlist for the 2019 Structural Awards today.

Fast + Epp is pleased that 3 Civic Plaza, designed by ZGF Architects, and Metrotown Skytrain Station, designed by VIA Architecture, have both made the shortlist, in the Tall and Slender Structures, and Structural Transformation categories, respectively.

3 Civic Plaza is a 52-storey tower in Surrey that is home to Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s urban campus, approximately 300 residential suites, a luxury hotel, rooftop garden, indoor fitness centre, and retail spaces. The design team intentionally deviated from the traditional “tower with a concrete core”, the norm for high-rise construction. 3 Civic Plaza features an external concrete shear wall structure, which proved more economical than a traditional concrete core method, and increased the design freedom for interior layouts.

Metrotown Skytrain Station was was built as part of the original 1986 Expo Line. In much need of expansion, Fast + Epp helped design a novel “loop truss” as a contemporary interpretation to the existing station hoop trusses. This truss allows for a 60m expansion at the east and west ends of the station and adds a new central fare gate entry area.

The IStructE Awards ceremony will take place on November 15, 2019 at The Brewery in London.
