Peter Lougheed Hall at the University of Alberta now complete

MultiHalleGridshellMore student housing is available at The University of Alberta now that Peter Lougheed Hall is complete. The 5-storey, 87,000 sq. ft. student residence is constructed of steel and concrete and offers housing for more than 140 residents. In addition to providing housing, the new building also features a single-storey dining hall consisting of glulam and GLT panels.


Allard Hall at MacEwan University Opens


MultiHalleGridshellConstructed of concrete and steel with extensive glazing at the exterior, the newly opened 424,000 sq. ft. Allard Hall features a multi-level atrium criss-crossed by several angled staircases. Housing galleries, multiple theatres and classrooms, the new facility will also be used extensively by the public.


Paul Fast to give lecture at the University of Illinois


MultiHalleGridshellFast + Epp founder Paul Fast will be giving a lecture on Monday, September 18, 2017, at the University of Illinois. Taking place in the Lawrence J. Plym Auditorium at Temple Hoyne Buell Hall, the lecture will explore Metaphorical Design + Structure. Reception to take place at 5pm in the Blicharski Atrium, Temple Hoyne Buell Hall with lecture to follow at 5:30pm.


Design of Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre Roof detailed in The Structural Engineer magazine

The Aquatic Centre, located in Surrey, BC was completed in 2016 and has since received numerous awards for its undulating roof structure and is a testament to the benefits of using timber to create innovative, cost-efficient buildings.

First Phase of National Arts Centre Renovations Complete


MultiHalleGridshellThe National Arts Centre is a landmark building for the performing arts located in the Parliament Hill precinct in Ottawa, Ontario. It has recently undergone extensive renovations with the initial phase of work being completed for the July 1st celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday where Paul Fast, Donald Schmitt and the rest of the architectural team were in attendance. Also present were Prince Charles and other dignitaries who participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony.


Improvements to the building include a new atrium and foyer addition featuring an architecturally striking coffered ceiling prefabricated as a novel hybrid timber-steel structure. Additional upgrades to the complex will be completed later this year and in 2018. 

Iconic 3 Civic Plaza Nearing Completion


MultiHalleGridshellThe topping off ceremony for 3 Civic Plaza in Surrey was held on Friday, June 16, 2017. Regarded as the third tallest building in Vancouver, its novel design departs from a conventional core approach. Visually locating expressive shear walls at the ends of the structure enables more flexibility for optimal suite layouts.


The building comprises of 5-storeys of office space and 38-storeys of residential units which are nearly sold out. Also included is retail space and a 20-storey hotel with 2 amenity floors. Kwantlen Polytechnic University will occupy 5-storeys within the building. Construction of the landmark building is scheduled for completion in December 2017.

Nail-Laminated Timber Design and Construction Guide now available

Mannheim Multihalle at the congress of the German Society for Concrete and Construction Technology

MultiHalleGridshellDr. Jochen Stahl presented the renovation concept for the preservation of the more than 40-year-old structure at the congress of the German Society for Concrete and Construction Technology in Stuttgart, Germany. The building constructed on the occasion of the German National Garden Show in 1975 became a landmark of the City of Mannheim. With the concept of Fast + Epp the original substance can be largely preserved for a new usage. Also another lecture of this technical meeting focused on the German National Garden Show in 2019 in Heilbronn and its sustainable urban development.
