Richmond Olympic Oval Recognized for Steel Excellence:

The Richmond Olympic Oval took home its ninth engineering award on June 12, 2010 from the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction's 2010 National Steel Design Awards.

The Oval received the Engineering Award of Excellence for an Outstanding Steel Structure, which primarily recognized the unique hybrid glulam-steel arches of the Oval, currently thought to be the longest spanning hybrid steel-wood arches in the world.

Fast + Epp wish to recognize steel fabricator and detailer George Third & Son for their significant contribution to the excellence in steel design of the Richmond Olympic Oval, without whom this achievement would not have been possible.

IStructE Fellowship:

Fast + Epp Principal Paul Fast is honoured to have been appointed as a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers in the UK, effective May 5th, 2010. The fellowship was conferred on May 19, 2010 during a recent trip to London where Paul spoke at a special seminar at the IStructE, as well as at the TRADA In Touch with Timber conference.

The new title of Chartered Structural Engineer, Fellow IStructE represents one of the highest honours internationally  and most senior ranking in the structural engineering profession, and is the latest installment in the growing trend of Fast + Epp involvement on an international scale. The recent trip to the UK was preceded by 2009's series of international competitions in Barcelona, London, and the States, featuring the Richmond Olympic Oval and Kingsway Pedestrian Bridge.

Architecture Meets Engineering:

Fast + Epp is pleased to announce that principals Paul Fast and Gerald Epp  were elected as honorary members of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia at the annual Conference and Awards Gala on Saturday, May 8th, 2010.

“They are far more than just architects’ handmaidens – they are true collaborators, riffing with their architectural colleagues to develop unique and elegant solutions appropriate to the challenges at hand." write Bing Thom and Michael Heeney of Bing Thom Architects. "...In many ways, the value of their collaboration is the creative energy and ideas they bring that often challenge conventional approaches. Whether it is use of architecturally expressed concrete tilt-ups, elegant and powerful cantilevers, or engineered wood columns, Fast + Epp opens up new spaces for architects to explore and push their ideas.”

Fast + Epp congratulates Gates Suter Architects on the Southern Gulf Islands House and Hughes Condon Marler Architects on the West Vancouver Community Centre, both of which received the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia Award in Architecture - Merit. Fast + Epp is proud to have collaborated as structural engineers with both architects on their award winning projects.
